• Teachers' pay is on a national scale.

  • At present a teacher can expect to start on at least £20,133.

  • A teacher can proceed through the Main Pay Scale to the Upper Pay Scale to £35,000.

  • In London, there are additional allowances for the higher cost of living. Starting at £25,000 in 2008.

  • Taking on extra responsibilities / gaining promotion moves you more quickly up the pay scale.

  • Headteachers of large secondary schools in London at the top of their scale earn over £100,000.
